Movie Night in the Book Nook - November 24th 2026 - The Sapphires - Event Ticket
Movie Night in the Book Nook at Tecolote — After Hours
THE SAPPHIRES
Four women. Vietnam. 1968. Motown turned all the way up.
Inspired by a true story, The Sapphires follows four young Aboriginal Australian women who leave home to become an unlikely soul group entertaining American troops during the Vietnam War.
They can sing. Their manager, Dave Lovelace (Chris O'Dowd), is convinced they can sing soul. And before long they're trading country songs for Motown, sequined dresses, harmonies and a tour considerably farther from home than anyone had planned.
But underneath the music and comedy is a much bigger story. Set against Australia's history of racism and the Stolen Generations, The Sapphires manages to move between politics, family, identity, war, romance and some seriously good music without losing its sense of fun.
Starring Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy, Shari Sebbens, Miranda Tapsell and Chris O'Dowd, it's warm, funny, complicated—and has the kind of soundtrack that makes sitting quietly through the credits rather difficult.
