Movie Night in the Book Nook at Tecolote — After Hours

O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?

Three escaped convicts. One buried treasure. No particular evidence that any of them knows what they're doing.

Deep in Depression-era Mississippi, the exceptionally vain Ulysses Everett McGill (George Clooney) breaks off a chain gang with fellow prisoners Pete and Delmar and sets out to recover a fortune supposedly buried before his incarceration.

What follows involves bank robbers, crooked politicians, a blind prophet, seductive sirens, a suspicious number of frogs, the Ku Klux Klan and an accidental hit record by a group called The Soggy Bottom Boys.

Very loosely—and we mean very loosely—inspired by Homer's Odyssey, the Coen brothers turn the American South into a strange, funny, sepia-toned folk mythology of their own.

The cast includes George Clooney, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson, John Goodman, Holly Hunter and Charles Durning, but the other star is the music. The Grammy-winning soundtrack helped spark a major revival of American bluegrass and roots music and became a phenomenon entirely of its own.

Literature, mythology, absurdity and great music.

Naturally, we're showing it in a bookstore.
