Movie Night in the Book Nook - January 19th 2026 - Silent Friend- Event Ticket
Movie Night in the Book Nook at Tecolote — After Hours
SILENT FRIEND
A tree has time to notice things.
People, less so.
At the center of Ildikó Enyedi's Silent Friend stands an ancient ginkgo tree in the botanical garden of a medieval German university. It has been there for more than a century, quietly witnessing three human stories unfold around it.
In 1908, the university's first female student enters the world of botany and begins seeing plants differently through photography. In 1972, a shy young student becomes fascinated by both a woman and the geranium she studies. And in 2020, a neuroscientist stranded far from home during the pandemic begins an unlikely experiment with the old ginkgo itself. The stories are separated by decades, but they're all circling the same peculiar question:
What if plants aren't simply the background to our lives?
Written and directed by Ildikó Enyedi and starring Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Luna Wedler, Enzo Brumm and Léa Seydoux, Silent Friend competed at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, where Wedler received the Marcello Mastroianni Award for an emerging actor.
It's a film about science, curiosity, loneliness, attention and our rather human assumption that we're the most interesting things in the room.
