Movie Night in the Book Nook - Oct 6th 2026 - CHAVELA - Event Ticket
Movie Night in the Book Nook at Tecolote — After Hours
CHAVELA
Red poncho. Tequila. A voice that could break your heart.
Chavela is the story of Chavela Vargas, the Costa Rican-born singer who arrived in Mexico as a teenager, made the country her home, and proceeded to sing rancheras entirely on her own terms.
She wore trousers, smoked cigars, carried a pistol, refused to change the pronouns in love songs traditionally sung by men—and turned raw vulnerability into an unmistakable musical style. Her extraordinary life crossed paths with Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and decades later filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar became one of the champions of her remarkable comeback.
Through archival footage, performances and intimate interviews, Chavela traces the whole unruly arc: fame, love affairs, alcoholism, disappearance from public life and an astonishing return to the stage in her seventies.
It's a music documentary. It's a Mexico story. It's a portrait of an artist who spent a lifetime refusing to become anyone other than herself.
Come upstairs. We'll turn the lights down.
